The aim of this project is to symbolise the idea of process.
We know that a process is a series of acts or operations that lead to an end but how can it be represented? In this case I approached the idea of creative process through a simple diagram and then designed a symbology which is meant to create a connection with the different stages performed in the act of knowing.
The text helps me to contextualise all visual work and using no other words than the ones of Marshall McLuhan:
Civilisation is built on literacy because literacy is a uniform processing of a culture by a visual sense extended in space and time by the alphabet.
So why use symbols to explain something that could be taught through words?
A symbol, that by definition does not have a logical connection with the object, allows me then to give it the meaning I want depending on its context.
The Alphabet and consequently the letter, the word and the phrase connect my ideas and allow me to relate directly to the symbols used in this project by giving them an ‘environment’ and by explaining them to you.
What might have seemed abstract in the beginning is now concrete. It is a process, a meaning to an end that starts with the reading of this text and the acceptance that any given symbol can suggest numerous things dictated by the readers’ cultural and historical background.
